Experience the Drama and Genius of Amadeus Live – A Must-See Performance at the Grunin Performing Arts Center!

Many of us might remember the movie Amadeus with the iconic actor Tom Hulce, who brought the role of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to life in such a memorable performance. Well, the 1984 film, directed by Miloš Forman, is based on Peter Shaffer's play of the same name, and lucky for us, Amadeus is being brought to the stage under the direction of Paul Chalakani at the Grunin Performing Arts Center in Toms River. No need to trek to NYC or Philadelphia to experience an award-winning performance — it's right here in our backyard!

Experience the Drama and Genius of Amadeus Live – A Must-See Performance at the Grunin Performing Arts Center.

Amadeus first premiered in 1979 and brings to the stage the dramatized rivalry between the legendary composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his contemporary, Antonio Salieri. The play portrays Mozart as a prodigious, childlike genius who creates music effortlessly, while Salieri’s jealousy of his counterpart leads him to madness. (There's little historical evidence to support this idea, by the way. Poor Salieri.) However, history has shown that Salieri was not particularly instrumental in helping Mozart despite having opportunities to do so, which is such a pity.

What's so compelling about the story is how it mirrors life today, showing how some people, driven by insecurities or pride, turn a blind eye to helping others. In the play, Salieri’s decision to reject any chance to support Mozart haunts him throughout his life. This regret is a powerful reminder that failing to encourage others can lead to our suffering. Through art, we can learn to do better—to embrace compassion and support rather than letting pride or insecurity stand in the way.

We’re glad that the play continues to be adapted and performed today. There's so much to learn and enjoy from it!

The OCC Repertory Theatre Company is bringing the play to the stage from March 14 to March 23, 2025, and we had the pleasure of attending the Saturday evening show on March 15th.

Keffner's interpretation of Mozart was equally captivating, embodying the genius and the childlike recklessness that defined the legendary composer.

The performances by Jeff Bodnar and Brendan Keffner in Amadeus were off-the-charts excellent. Bodnar's raw emotion and depth brought the character’s envy and internal torment to life. Keffner's interpretation of Mozart was equally captivating, embodying the genius and the childlike recklessness that defined the legendary composer. Together, they created a memorable experience for the audience.

The chemistry of the entire cast in Amadeus was impressive. Each actor brought their character to life with authenticity, and together, they formed a well-coordinated ensemble.

Taylor Bongarzone’s portrayal of Constanze Weber added a layer of tenderness and strength. Bill King, as Emperor Joseph II, brought both humor and gravitas to the role, offering a perfect counterpoint to the frenetic energy of Mozart. Kyle Bodie and Brian Lodato, in their respective roles as Count Kilian von Strack and Count Orsini-Rosenberg, added further layers of intrigue to the political backdrop of the story. Johnny Friedman and Grey Kellerman as the Venticello, embodying their roles with wit and precision, brought a dynamic quality to their scenes that kept the energy high.

The intimate space at the Black Box Theater allows for a close connection between the performers and the audience, making it that much more enjoyable.
